MOVIETONE
The Sand And The Stars (Drag City)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

There's nothing like a good sneaky record. One that barely registers at first, then slowly seeps into the room, and eventually engulfs it. Such is the case with Movietone, a loosey goosey British folk pop conglomerate based around one Kate Wright. Her mopish vocals are the fulcrum as a myriad of breathy instruments (clarinets, cellos) balance precariously on either side. It's all about dynamics, moods and subtleties. In the wrong hands this could veer into utter drivel, but Movietone does manage to paint a pretty picture without falling into a self absorbed crevasse.
