ROBERT MILES
Organik Remixes (Salt)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
I'm not familiar with the source music for this remix album - Robert Miles
2001 release, Organik - but in this case I think that's a feature, not a
bug. The original, Mile's first release on his own Salt Records, was
created in rebellion against the commercial restraints imposed on his career
by the success of his international hit "Children" and the expectation that
he'd continue in the 'dream music' genre he was principally responsible for
creating.
The Italian DJ (Roberto Concina to the homefolks) set off to create
something darker, and almost deliberately anti-commercial, and went ahead
and had commercial success with it anyway. For this project he turned his
compositions over to some of the top names in the electronica field, along
with a couple of novice DJ's discovered through an online remix contest
developed just for the album. The result maintains some of Miles darker
vision, along with the multi-ethnic character of the music, but adds a layer
of accessibility with the introduction of some club beats and other elements.
The music operates on many levels, and there's doubtless much to be gained
by introspective dissection of track after track, mix by mix, but there's
also great pleasure to be found in just letting it wash over you, my
preferred use for tasty, trancy tunes like these.
