Steven Bernstein moves in those ultra hip avant jazz circles that only New York can foster, but unlike his skronking compadres John Lurie and John Zorn, he produces easier on the ears music. It may be less adventurous but sometimes a funking good time is just right. After several takes at retooling other peoples' music, Bernstein steps out with a full set of originals - the classic jump off the plank into sharkey waters that spells the death of many a jazz man. Lo and behold Bernstein comes up swimmingly intact. Clever groove music won't win any Downbeat polls, but this horny Sex Mob will surely please a lot of upscale down tempo lounges.
