SUPERHOPPER
Does This Sound Exciting Yet? (Guilt Ridden Pop)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
It's punk, it's got pop sensibilities, but it's not typical pop-punk. Is it exciting? Sometimes, yeah. In fact, songs like "Button" drive hard and bounce like a superball, blasting out in totally unexpected ways with sounds your radio hasn't bashed you over the head with until you're sick to death of them. At their least exciting Superhopper still has a cool vibe that carries them along just fine and makes them interesting enough to keep listening to. The St. Paul band -- who would quite possibly kick your ass if you said they were from Minneapolis from what I've heard -- have been at since the late 90s, though the rhythm section is a recent addition. With clever tunes like "Laraine Newman" (in which they blame Chevy Chase for the former SNL star's coke problem) and "I Am The Hermit" (which features lyrics lamenting the fact that nobody listens to the words anymore), and the engrossing atmosphere they automatically create simply by playing together, Superhopper may soon find themselves spending less time in their beloved St. Paul and more time on the road.
