THE PULSES
Little Brothers (Dirtnap)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
I really liked the first Pulses CD, also on Dirtnap, and this short follow-up is
just as good; no wait, it's even better! This trio, which features ex-Fallouts
bassist Shannon, manages to combine slightly arty Wire-ish punk, garage rock
and pop into a great mixture. They've expanded the sound a bit, too. "Buster"
features some excellent trumpet and piano, "Numbers" has cool organ, "Stop The
Presses" has accordion, and bongos show up on "Frozen Love." I'm a big lover
of bongos, so you know I'm down with that! Flourishes of psychedelia and
freakbeat show up on "Affiliate." All the songs are a minute and half long, with the exception of the aforementioned "Buster," which breaks the two-minute mark. An excellent, albeit short, release.
