RANDALL BRAMBLETT
Thin Places (New West)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
Randall Bramblett's follow-up to his critically-acclaimed 2001 New West debut, No More Mr. Lucky, is an outstanding sophomore effort that showcases one of Athens, Georgia's finest go-to musicians. For me, Bramblett's songwriting recalls New West labelmates Delbert McClinton and John Hiatt, and these American troubadours have much more in common than a record label. Randall, Delbert and John have a way with words, and they carry on a tradition of Southern singer-songwriters. Thin Places has some ragged edges thrown in with the polished pop of Thin Places' predecessor. Find out why Bramblett has helped Steve Winwood, Widespread Panic, and Sea Level on keyboard, sax and vocals, and check out Thin Places, particularly for the hopeful soul of "Comin' Round Soon," or Randall's B-3-infused "Black Coat."
