WANDA CHROME
AND THE LEATHER PHARAOHS
More (Disturbed)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

Another fine collection of Detroit rock and roll from this power trio. Even though they're from Milwaukee, you can just tell they have the blood life of the Stooges, MC5, Rationals, Amboy Dukes, Sonics Rendezvous Band and many more running through their veins. Despite their moniker, Wanda is not the main singer, and is in fact the bassist. Cliff, the guitarist, is the lead singer and has a great voice. Joel rounds out the trio on the skins. They have a really good, full sound for a trio, and a knack for penning great songs. On this, their latest, they preach about the good in "Pot 'n' PBR" and "Down and Dirty" and the bad in "Guns Of War" and "Private Monkey." All their songs are riff-heavy with dirty guitar and tasty little solos. They do a couple of instrumentals, including a surfy thing called "Miss Mystery," and a rocker called "1234" wherein the only lyrics are, as you may guess, them shouting "1234!" Good taste prevails in the choice of covers: "Loose" by the Stooges and Radio Birdman's "New Race." The band really gets down and kicks out the jams on the last song, a call to arms of sorts called "Soul Revolution" that melds soul, rock and funk while imploring people to "get on up, get on down, open your mind and take a look around."
