SIGMATROPIC
Sixteen Haiku And Other Stories (Thirsty Ear)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

A record so good they released it thrice. No kidding. Originally a Greek language disc, then a European release, and finally our very own North American version. A highly infectious music virus, Sixteen Haiku sets the words of late poet George Seferis to dreamy pop soundscapes, while an elite list of performers take turns at the mike. There must be something in the Mediterranean waters cuz the results are quite mesmerizing. Howe Gelb, in his patented rambling manner, is terrific as always. The whispery Robert Wyatt is chilling. Cat Power blows everyone out of the water in under two minutes. And if that ain't enough, how about Lee Renaldo yalping "what's wrong with the rudder, the boat's going in circles." Sterling performances all around. Jump in, cuz this here's the best music hour of the fresh year.
