THE BIG CREAK
Just Left Town (Opulent Records)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Midwestern power pop dosed up with just enough roots influence to maintain a distinctly American sound, the music on The Big Creak's third full length release reflects the kind of musical maturity that comes from an eight year history on stage and in the studio. This is the album 1001 bands try to make every day, and only 1 or 2 can actually pull off.

First, the quartet is not only impressively talented on an individual level, but they've each found exactly what they have to add to each moment of every song to create a similarly impressive ensemble sound. Lead vocalist/guitarist Jim Koch has terrific pipes and sings the songs like he means it, perhaps because he wrote all but one (that being credited to keyboardist/vocalist Aaron Bright). Actually, there are times when it's hard to tell that bassist Paul Graves and drummer Maxwell Button are two people, which, of course, is just as it should be.

Just a flat out indie-pop masterpiece is all this thing is.
