CHRIS DANIELS
The Spark (Moon Voyage)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
Chris Daniels and the Kings' ninth CD is one of the most diverse rock and roots records I've ever heard. Daniels has led the Kings for nearly two decades from his Colorado home, and The Spark has attracted 19 guest players that have played with the Kings over the years. In many of those years, the Kings have been on the road for more than 40 weeks, working European and US festivals and clubs. Not a bad gig for six-piece band that proudly wears its jump blues on its sleeve. We're talking serious horns here: Jim Waddell on sax and Darryl "Doody" Abrahamson on trumpet, plus guests like Bill Pontarelli on clarinet, Nelson Hinds on trombone, and Tony Klatka on trumpet. Frontman Daniels shares guitar work with Colin "Bones" Jones, and the rhythm section of Randy Amen on drums and Kevin "Bro" Lege on bass keep blues, zydeco, jazz, and jump time. Guests like Tony Furtado and Billy Payne help out on the touching "If I'd Only Take You Dancing," and Sonny Landreth and Richie Furay join the Kings for a Mexican journey on "50/50." I also liked the fanciful and fun Forties-style "Jump" from Dave Sheen (The Jayhawks), and the infectious cover of Professor Longhair's "In The Night," with Mamou Playboys Steve Riley and Sam Broussard. There's a diverse and enjoyable musical stew on The Spark - horn fans will love it.
