KATE & ANNA MCGARRIGLE
La Vache Qui Pleure/French Record (Tribu/Select)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Revisiting their much loved French Record a couple of decades later, Kate and Anna McGarrigle not only manage to capture that wonderful Quebec backwoods feel, but actually eclipse it. Teaming again with lyricist Philippe Tatartcheff the sisters cook up a warm set of originals that play like well worn, traditional standards. You can almost hear the shuffling of instruments - an endearing trademark of the live shows. Piano tinkling, guitar plucking, accordion squeezing and those angelic harmonies: if you've ever wondered why the McGarrigles inspire such fervent devotion, this is about as good a place as any to start.
