THE TRIGGERS
Shoot Your Mouth Off (Dirtnap)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

Wow, these guys are really good! Featuring a female singer named Candy who sounds like she stepped out of some obscure '77 punk band. A pint-size gal who was dwarfed by tall guitarist Jonny and bassist Tamika when I saw 'em live at The Funhouse, she was an unhinged joy to watch as she bounced around like a rubber ball screaming slightly off-key vocals. Musically, they are more early '80s than '70s punk, I guess; they definitely have that So. Cal. Punk sound going on here and there, but they sound original at the same time. They remind in spots of the Avengers, the Lewd, the Accident, the Bags and the Enemy. I love the way drummer Justin and Jonny chime in on backing vocals, often singing lines along with Candy, or doing call 'n' response stuff. There's plenty of killer guitar shit on here, too, as Jonny whips out some really great lead work all over the place. This whole CD is bursting with energy and venomous, cynical anger on songs like "Do Or Die," "Answer The Phone," "Average" and "Stay Away." The last song, "We Play For Fun" pretty much sums up their credo, and that's a good one if ya ask me.
