FIREWATER
Songs We Should Have Written (Jetset)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
How apropos: a covers record by rock's chief chameleons Firewater. Not that this is a note for note ape, no sir, Firewater are pop innovators who attack, er approach classic radio staples with manipulation, not destruction on their minds. The reverence accorded such AM pop fodder as "The Beat Goes On" can only come from a deep respect for the source. Ergo the title. Still the best bits surface only when Firewater throw caution to the passing wind and fuck with sacred untouchables like "Folsom Prison Blues" - presented as a fiery Gun Club take - and "Is That All There Is?" - gussied up in excellent Tom Waits fashion. Most palatable.
