KINZEL AND HYDE
Still Alive in America (Blue Heron Blues)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

Kinzel and Hyde are a Portland, Oregon guitar and harp duo that have established themselves as a fine traditional blues act in the Pacific Northwest. They've received a handful of Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, and Still Live in America captures Kinzel and Hyde live from 1998 to 2001. Stu plays Resophonic, acoustic and electric guitar to LynnAnn's harmonica, concertina and melodeon. This CD features heartfelt interpretations of Leroy Carr's "How Long," Muddy Waters' "Can't Get Satisfied," and Rev. Gary Davis' "Goin' Down the Road," in addition to originals like "Hubcap Hula," the traditional Cajun "Lonesome La La" and "Jolie Blonde." Stu and LynnAnn's trips down Louisiana way remind me of folks like the Savoy-Doucet constellation of artists that work hard to preserve and promote musique Acadienne. Compared to their more recent Blue Heron CD, Oklahoma Credit Card, Still Alive in America has a more rootsy, down-home feel to it, but each disc is a top-notch CD that deserves a wider blues audience.
