THE BLOODY LOVELIES
Some Truth and A Little Money (Cheap Lullabye)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

I'm always a little wary when I get a CD to review from someone and the hype sheet accompanying it talks of their commercial potential, chart action, and overall greatness to the point of egomania. Don't get me wrong, I think self-hype is a great thing, but it's hard to take stuff like this seriously. I mean, you can almost feel the desperation to be big pop stars coming off the hype sheet. "We are super-talented, really we are!" Their press sheet claims that MP3.com Music Director, Rod Underhill "describes The Bloody Lovelies as the best kept secret in Rock-n-Roll." Well, it's no surprise that they're the best kep secret in rock and roll because there is nothing cutting edge, exciting, or rock and roll about this band. Unless you think Dave Mathews is really rockin' stuff, I doubt this is gonna turn your crank. The singer's voice is especially annoying in that sorta Scott Strapp whiney style, and musically I found this pretty uninspiring, like some kinda throwback to '70s MOR "rock music." In fact, I could only make it through half of the CD before I had to put on something with some guts. Like the Undertones new CD. Now those guys are like 40-something and they piss all over the lightweight crap these guys are trying to pass off as "rock and roll."
