GRAHAM PARKER
Your Country (Bloodshot)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Graham Parker's shot at a country record might not sit too well with the Nashville crowd, but, as with each new release, deserves an audience. Parker's songs have always shone lyrically, with the music sometimes lagging a bit, but when the two come together it can be quite sensational. Much like Elvis Costello, Parker's ace in the hole is the marriage of passion and anger, and much like Costello he created some fiery rock moments, and much like Costello he is trying his hand at American country music. Tough act for a Brit, but Parker chooses an easier, rootsy path, much in line with his established style. A little bit of twang, and a little bit of fiddle here and there doesn't seem at all out of place. In fact the country backdrop sets up the words that much more. A dandy duet with Lucinda Williams seals the deal.
