GREY DOES MATTER
How to Make Millions in Real Estate
(JankOmatic Music)

Reviewed by Erick Mertz

I don't know if I've somehow moved past "catchy" but I hear it, and can often only engage it on a stark and intellectual level. So when Jason Crawford bangs out the line, over and over, that "Anything times zero is zero," something inside alerts me that his song "Zero" should stir me.

It just that it really doesn't.

That isn't a statement that should at all detract from Grey Does Matter's ability to layer catchy pop guitars over catchy angst ridden lyrics - and the album How to Make Millions in Real Estate does just that - it just illustrates the degree of conflict that the album presents for me personally. His voice sounds catchy, and he plays catchy songs, but I found it too easy to change discs in mid-stream. Make no mistake, Crawford is extremely talented and his album sounds like a glittering prize for a Sadie Hopkins dance or soundtrack on the way to Winter Formal, but somewhere in its execution, something alerts me that it isn't enough.
