THE BUTTLESS CHAPS
Love This Time (Mint Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
This doesn't sound much like country western music. It's more like a
collection of space cowboy poetry put to music, retaining the jangly rhythm
of the written form but set to a wide assortment of musics, heavy on the
'80s synth pop and keyboard samples and the occasional Hank Williamesque
rambling guitar tune and a capella choral ensemble. There are great lines
throughout this album, thrown in apparently for rhyming purposes, like "Why
did Molly Ringwald film 'Wild Horses?'." It's a really bizarre little
collection of songs, musically grabbing at all kinds of things but somehow
managing to fit together as one album.
