CATIE CURTIS
Dreaming In Romance Languages (Vanguard)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
The section of my CD shelves reserved for 'Folky Females' is big, and ever
expanding, and, I like to think, fairly comprehensive. Fond as I am of the
type, though, and hard as I try to keep up, once in a while I get caught off
guard.
Halfway through my first listen to Catie Curtis' Vanguard debut, I was
making room on my list of favorites and getting all excited about sharing my
new discovery. Then I discovered that my 'new discovery' already has a
handful of releases on labels large and small, and has been featured on TV
shows like Dawson's Creek and Felicity, and that I may, in fact, be the last
one on my block to find her.
Doesn't matter a bit, though. This is still a terrific album, full of songs
that are simultaneously deeply personal and universally accessible, and "I
woke up dreaming in romance languages..." is still one of the best opening
lines of any album I've ever heard (or any novel I've ever read for that
matter) and whether you know her or not, you're gonna love Catie Curtis' new
record.
And if you're already a fan, move over. I've just joined the club.
Track List:
Saint Lucy * Deliver Me * Hold On * The Night * It's The Way You
