LOU DOG
61 Old Depot (Betty Jane Records)

Reviewed by Erick Mertz

Lou Dog brings it to you rough: from the guitars, to his husky barrel-chested vocals to his stories of lost souls in the landscape of a heartless American underground. He isn't frowning on the imperfect world that surrounds him; there is more of a knowing nod in his manner, a tip of his cap to a troubling muse. The latest album, 61 Old Depot, from Lou Dog is filled with bowery poems and personalities, evoked with a Lou Reed-esque fascination with where the wild things are. Its impressive attributes include tight, well-produced musicianship and vocal bravado, and for those who would eschew catchy for smart, 61 Old Depot is a perfect record.
