CAROLINA ROAD
The Road That Took You There (CMH Records)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
Carolina Road is traditional bluegrass music like Bill Monroe used to play - Well written songs, soaring vocal harmonies, and tight instrumental playing. The subject matter is about life, love, death, home, and god; important things in rural southern life.
Caroline Road was formed in 1998 by Lorraine Jordan, who plays mandolin in the group. She's joined by Jason Barie on fiddle, twin fiddle, and bass vocals; Rick Pardue on banjo and baritone vocals; Tim Massey on guitar, lead tenor, and baritone vocals; Gary Richardson on bass; and David Guthrie on guitar, lead vocals, and tenor vocals. As expected, the group places a premium on dynamic coordinating of their singing.
Traditional bluegrass music takes a few listens by the modern ear to appreciate it. At first hearing, it sounds a bit dated. Delve deeper, and you will be rewarded. The Road That Took You There takes you to musical pleasure. Take those first few steps.
