THE EVAPORATORS
Ripple Rock (Alternative Tentacles)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

I guess all those years of Nardwuar pestering Jello Biafra have paid off since the latest Evaporators is on Biafra's label. Other than that, not much of a departure from the Vaps' other stuff. Fun-filled, wacky, neurotic, hook-filled "ripple rock" from these crazy Canucks. The ultimate Vaps experience is seeing them live, Nardwuar being such a consummate showman and all, but this here studio effort may be their best yet. How can you knock songs like "Addicted To Cheese," "I Feel Like A Fat, Frustrated Fuck," "(I've Got Icicles) On My Testicles," "Half-empty Halls," "I Say That On Purpose To Bug You," "Barney Rubble Is My Double," and even a tribute to an obscure Canadian punk band "Cardboard Brains." All of these feature the able backing of John Collins (New Pornographers, Smugglers), David Carswell (Smugglers) and Scott Livingstone. Some guests include Rodney Graham (of U-Jerks and Volumizer fame) on organ, and vocals from Lisa Marr and Megan Barnes. Oh, and they cover a Pointed Sticks song, "I Quit School." As usual, there are crazed interviews by Nardwuar of Rahzel and Snoop Dog, some bonus tracks by "Thee Dublins," amazing liner notes and enhanced CD video featuring the Nard verbally sparring with Jello Biafra.
