GENERATION X
Live At Sheffield (Empty Records Europe)

Reviewed by Alan Wright

An excellent quality live CD of a killer Gen X show recorded in December of 1978. Really good sound, and Derwood's guitar is totally cranked up and fuzzed-out sounding. I don't know if he was using different gear or what, but I've never really heard him sound like this before. The band's firing on all cylinders at this show, sounding really energized. They kick off with the "Ready Steady Go Intro" which leads into "From The Heart." Material from the recently released Valley Of The Dolls gets aired, like "English Dream," "Night of the Cadillacs," "Paradise West," "King Rocker" and "Love Like Fire." They pull out b-sides like "No No No" and from the first album an excellent "Kiss Me Deadly," "Promises Promises" and "Day By Day." The medley of "100 Punks/Kleenex" is really crazy sounding as they interject some '50s standards like "Nervous Breakdown" and "Rip It Up" into it. They end it all off with a version of "Shakin' All Over." But, wait there's more! A hidden bonus track finds them doing a medley of "Rock and Roll," "Hey Mama," "I Can't Explain," and many other '50s and '60s songs!
