JOE LOVANO
I'm All For You (Blue Note)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
The versatile Lovano is an artist who likes surprises. Along those lines, I'm All For You is an unexpected treat, a recording of all ballads played with loving care and heartfelt eloquence. Lovano, on tenor saxophone, is joined by an all-star cast of venerable jazz veterans. Hank Jones on piano and Paul Motian on drums and cymbals have been performing for over fifty years, George Mraz on bass only for thirty five. All are consummate artists who excel either as integral members of the rhythm section or as front men of the highest order. Hank Jones, at 84, must be singled out for creating a bewitching presence. Jones still has that magical touch on piano and is both a brilliant accompanist and talented soloist.
Lovano, whose own solos are always full of thoughtful, well-crafted improvisation, shines throughout this recording. His playing is tasteful and creative, yet honors the spirit of each ballad. Its obvious that the making of this CD was a labor of love for Lovano and an important step in his evolution as a major jazz musician. From the opening number, "I'm All For You," which he wrote, through the last song, "Countdown," by John Coltrane, Lovano's playing is concise and taut. These tunes, though played often in the past by many artists, are never trite and banal in Lovano's hands. Years from now I'm All For You should occupy a special place in Lovano's discography. Highly recommended.
