No Depression - What It Sounds Like (Vol.1) (Dualtone)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
The magazine that started it all, well, chronicled it all anyways, No Depression took its name from a Carter Family nugget, and championed the resurgence of honest country music in the face of the diabolical new country tidal wave sweeping the nation. Bridging the connection between generations was key as Johnny Cash fans suddenly discovered Lucinda Williams, and Wilco fans unearthed Merle Haggard. And for those still unsure about the whole thing, here's a handy dandy platter to bring it all home. Cash starts, the Carters finish, and a bevy of alt-country folks stuff the middle. It's a twang sandwich of the tasty variety. Dig in.
